Kebony Hewn Outbuilding,
Maidenhead.

A sculptural timber outbuilding crafted from a continuous skin of Kebony cladding,
seamlessly extending from wall to roof.

Architectural Concept

The Kebony Hewn Outbuilding is conceived as a simple and sculptural timber form, carefully crafted to sit quietly within its landscape setting. Clad almost entirely in Kebony timber, the building is designed to feel as though it has been carved from a single material, with only subtle standing seam zinc elements and finely detailed metal-framed openings punctuating the composition.

Rather than treating walls and roof as separate architectural elements, the design employs a continuous skin of vertical shadow-gap Kebony boards that flow uninterrupted across the entire building, reinforcing the purity of the form and creating a simple, monolithic architectural expression.

Technical Resolution

Achieving this apparent simplicity required an extraordinary level of technical coordination and craftsmanship. Every board was carefully set out to ensure precise alignment as the cladding transitions seamlessly from wall to roof, maintaining the integrity of the continuous timber surface.

Behind the restrained architectural language lies a sophisticated construction system. Concealed waterproofing layers, support rails and thousands of carefully coordinated fixings enable the roof to perform as a fully weathertight envelope while preserving the purity of the external appearance.

Material Expression

Kebony was selected for its durability, dimensional stability and natural character. Its rich texture and ability to weather gracefully ensure that the building will continue to mature within its landscape setting, gradually developing the silvery tones associated with naturally aged timber.

The result is a highly crafted timber structure in which material, detail and form are inseparable. By extending the timber cladding across both walls and roof as a single continuous surface, the building demonstrates how careful detailing and material honesty can transform a modest outbuilding into a refined and enduring piece of architecture.
